Meet Mike Van!
Working out of Green Lotus Tattoo and Laser in Melbourne, Mike Van has built a strong name for himself through bold blackwork tattoos, while still keeping the versatility that came from learning in the street shop era.
Mike’s introduction to tattooing started young.
“My dad and family friends had tattoos and used to give me tattoo magazines as a kid.” That early obsession eventually turned into a career, and over the years his style has evolved into predominantly heavy blackwork, while still pulling influence from oriental and realism tattooing.
“I came up tattooing most styles, so I still enjoy mixing different elements together.” Artists like Alex Binnie, Leo Zulueta and Tas Danazoglou have all played a part in shaping his approach to tattooing.

Music-wise, Not Hell, Not Heaven by Scowl is currently on repeat.
Like most tattooers, Mike still remembers his first tattoo — a tribal piece across the shoulder blades done with a prison-style tattoo machine on a mate who had recently been released from prison. “At the time I thought it was pretty good… I’d hate to see it now,” he laughs.

When asked what advice he’d give younger artists getting into tattooing, Mike keeps it simple:
“Work hard and stay humble.”

He’s also hoping to return to Iron Gate this year after an incredible experience at last year’s convention.
As for his go-to Tattoo Warehouse products, Mike rates Hannya Pens, Dingo Drip and Panthera XXX among his favourites.

For Mike, the best part about tattooing is still the lifestyle and creativity that comes with it. “Getting to make art for a living. It doesn’t get much better than that.” And if tattooing didn’t exist? “Hopefully something creative still… but probably on the dole,” he jokes.
